On the 20th of June the SmartFarming app was released. An app focused on supporting India cotton farmers to farm with their eyes on the future. With tailored agricultural advice, the app informs farmers on how to increase their yields. Decreasing the loss of crops, stressful working conditions, and unsustainable practices.
Cotton farming conditions in India
Cotton farmers comprise a large part of the bottom of the pyramid in India. Cotton is a low and insecure source of income, sketching stressful living conditions. Lack of access to agricultural knowledge and low cost inputs is prominent amongst these farmers. Consequently, crops are lost and unsustainable, chemical fertilisers are used.
SmartFarming app provides guidance and encourages sustainability
The SmartFarming app assists cotton farmers to identify issues with their crops on time, and subsequently leads them to multiple possible solutions. The app does this by giving timely push-notifications. Using an illustrative design, users can easily understand their crop, potential pests and diseases. The solutions suggested are in order of preventive first, organic second, and as a last resort, conventional.
By making cotton farming easier, more sustainable, and more lucrative, working conditions can improve and a stable and sufficient income can be provided.
A participatory and free app
The app was developed by SmartFarming in a participatory manner together with cotton farmers and companies in Maharashtra, India. Enviu supported in launching the product, including testing the product with customers and building the team, with the aid of Cordaid. SmartFarming is an agricultural technology company with a mission to use smartphone technology to transform current unsustainable agriculture practices.
It is now available in Marathi, Hindi, and English. And it is free to be used by farmers all over India. The app can be dowloaded in the Google Play Store.
